Q & A

What do you mean by recycled silver?

Most of our jewellery is made from ECOSILVER- a ‘brand‘ of recycled sterling silver by a British supplier Cooksongold. We also repair and remodel old jewellery.

Only about 30% of silver comes from silver mines and the rest is a by-product of copper refining so it is really not an ‘ethical’ or green metal. That is why we use recycled silver and when possible also Fairtrade certified.

Is recycled silver and gold better?

The answer is yes and no, it really depends on your angle. Our consumption patterns are bad and if we continue to insist on growth the way we are no amount of recycling will help us. On the other hand, they say that the people who are crazy enough to change the world are the ones who do ....and we are crazy.

But seriously, we are not naive to think that our little brand can change the world-  our contribution  is like a tiny drop of water in a gigantic ocean of industrial production. To give you an idea,  each year there are about 2500 tonnes of pure gold mined in the world and in 2018 we used just under 70 g- a tiny drop indeed. And don’t forget that the trade with gold is actually much larger- because precious metals do get recycled- and has many other ethical implications.

So no matter how hard we try, we cannot do much but what gives as hope is the fact that we are a part of a growing movement of small(ish) fashion brads who do thing differently and although it often feels like tilting at windmills we manage to spread the word and slowly we get our message across to more people.

We think that recycling is great but we are advocates of Fairtrade Gold and Silver. We use Fairtrade certified metals whenever we can and believe that it is a far superior system of extracting mineral resources.
